Wearable displays are screens built into devices worn on the body: on the wrist (smartwatches, fitness bands), in front of the eyes (AR/VR glasses and headsets), or embedded in clothing and skin-mounted patches. They solve a harder problem than a phone screen does. In my experience on wearable programs, the design is driven by three constraints at once: very little battery, very little space, and the need to be readable outdoors at a glance.
The Main Categories of Wearable Displays
1. Wrist-Worn Displays (Smartwatches and Bands)
Today these are mostly flexible AMOLED panels. The key enabler is the LTPO backplane, which combines two types of thin-film transistor circuitry to get the benefits of both: LTPS for drive speed and IGZO oxide for low leakage. Apple introduced LTPO with the Apple Watch Series 5, enabling the always-on display and refresh rates as low as 1Hz to save power.
Panel makers keep pushing efficiency: LG Display says its watch OLED reduces power loss by 14% compared with its 2023 panel. Brightness has also climbed sharply, with the Apple Watch Ultra 3 rated at up to 3,000 nits.
The next backplane step is high-mobility oxide (HMO). Mass-produced oxide TFTs currently offer mobility below 10 cm²/Vs, while the industry target for coming OLED generations is 30 to 50 cm²/Vs.
2. MicroLED for Watches
MicroLED has finally reached the wrist. AUO has commercialized MicroLED smartwatch displays through shipments for the Garmin fēnix 8 Pro, and Samsung Display is building a pilot line for MicroLED smartwatch panels at its A2 campus in Asan, South Korea. Its prototype is a 2.1-inch panel with 418 × 540 resolution and 4,000 nits peak brightness.
The honest caveat comes from TrendForce: high power consumption and cost still limit MicroLED's ability to compete in the short term with mature OLED. Apple's experience shows the risk, as the company cancelled its in-house MicroLED wearable display project in March 2024.
3. Near-Eye Microdisplays (AR/VR and Smart Glasses)
Here the panel is tiny (often under 1 inch) and viewed through optics, so pixel density matters most. OLEDoS (Micro OLED) builds OLEDs directly on a single-crystal silicon wafer, with drive circuitry integrated into the silicon backplane using CMOS processes. Competing approaches include LCoS, OLEDoS, and LEDoS.
According to Omdia, near-eye display revenue should reach $1.2 billion in 2026 and $2.8 billion in 2028, with OLEDoS as the core growth technology. At AWE USA 2026, Samsung showed prototype glasses using a 0.62-inch RGB OLEDoS display.
4. Stretchable and Textile Displays (Emerging)
These are still mostly in the lab. A 2025 review in Micromachines covers applications ranging from wearable healthcare and smart textiles to implantable biomedical devices. University of Chicago researchers built an OLED-based array published in Nature Materials that can stretch to more than twice its original length while still displaying a clear image.
What Makes Wearable Displays Hard to Manufacture
- Power budget: The display is often the largest power consumer in a watch. Variable refresh rates, low-leakage TFTs, and dark UI themes on OLED all matter.
- Sunlight readability: Outdoor use demands high peak luminance plus effective anti-reflection treatment, which is why brightness specs keep rising.
- Free-form shapes: Round and squircle panels require laser cutting, curved gate driver routing, and careful edge design, all of which affect yield.
- Encapsulation and bonding: Flexible OLEDs rely on thin-film encapsulation to block moisture and oxygen, and the bend-back COP or COF bonding area must survive drop and flex testing.
- Durability: Cover glass or sapphire, scratch resistance, and sweat and water ingress are reliability gates that phone panels face less severely.
The Bottom Line
As of late 2026, LTPO OLED dominates the wrist, OLEDoS leads near-eye displays, MicroLED is entering premium watches in small volumes, and stretchable displays remain in research and development.
